Trails wind through Dana Point Headlands Conservation Area, which has sweeping ocean views and an interpretive center. Home to about 40,000 people, it has one of the few harbors along the Orange County coastline. With easy access provided by the Pacific Coast Highway, the town’s beaches have become a popular local surfing location. Each year, the city holds very popular festivals which draw in large numbers of visitors. The two largest are the Festival of Whales in March, which features more frequent whale-watching cruises to coincide with the larger amount of whales moving through the area. In September, the Tall Ships Festival features the largest annual gathering of Tall Ships on the west coast of the United States.
